Peterseim Metallwerke, headquartered in Olpe, Germany, is known worldwide as a specialist in seamless drawn tubes made from aluminium and brass. The tubes, produced in the Olpe facilities, are the base material for a very broad range of different products, e.g. components for technical devices, fittings and the automotive industry.

To manufacture such components meeting the highest technical standards requires both comprehensive technical expertise and cutting-edge machinery and equipment. Both have been a matter of course at Peterseim Metallwerke for decades. In addition to providing continuous training to staff in the fields of materials science and metal forming technology, Peterseim regards regular investments in machinery as a priority. Many customers take advantage of the Peterseim team’s expertise and appreciate the machines made by Peterseim, which are often provided with special functions for the manufacture of their components.

Peterseim is currently investing in a universal turning centre for the complete processing of tubes and in an automatic deburring machine, in order to further optimise quality and maximise production efficiency. The investment amounts to a total of some EUR 280,000.00.

The universal turning centre made by Emco allows complex and demanding turning and milling work to be carried out with the maximum precision. Equipped with a counter spindle, automatic part removal and a part collection device, workpieces are deposited without damaging the surface. The main spindle enables tubes with a maximum diameter of 51 mm to be machined, while with the counter spindle a diameter of 32 mm is possible. This centre allows workpieces of up to 1,200 mm in length to be machined.

The automatic deburring machine made by RSA is another new acquisition. Using this machine, the inner and outer edges, as well as both face edges of tubes can be simultaneously deburred. Equipped with high-capacity brushes and an automatic transport for the workpieces, this automatic machine is the optimum solution for deburring workpieces.

These investments are designed to help ensure that Peterseim Metallwerke will continue to maintain their reputation as an extremely flexible partner with a broad range of personalised and technically demanding special solutions well into the future.

The welding sets provided by many renowned manufacturers contain workpieces made from seamless drawn tubes by Peterseim Metallwerke. Nozzles in particular have to withstand high temperatures.

Brass tube sections are therefore processed until a finished workpiece – in this case the nozzle – is ready for use. Brass is chosen for welding nozzles, because this material has proven very effective in terms of safety and durability at high temperatures. After all, the flame reaches an impressive temperature of 3200°C in autogeneous welding processes.

To safeguard both process safety in industrial applications and the operator’s health and safety, it is essential to ensure that no component in the welding set becomes deformed or damaged under the influence of heat.

At Peterseim Metallwerke in Olpe, brass and aluminium are used to produce seamless tubes which meet the highest quality requirements and which are used worldwide as base materials for many high-end components. In our recently enlarged shop for processing and finishing tubes, at Peterseim we work with the greatest possible care and efficiency to manufacture perfectly shaped, semi-finished products from these tubes.

They include, amongst others, nozzles for welding torches, which may at first glance not seem to be special products, but in fact their manufacture also requires profound knowledge of how to work with brass, a very demanding material.

Environmental protection is becoming an ever-greater priority in many areas of our lives. This is particularly true in the manufacture of new products, where the choice of materials and auxiliary materials will be assessed more critically in future. As a consequence, direct manufacture will become more environmentally friendly, the impact resulting from using the product will be reduced and it will be easier to reuse the raw materials.

A new kind of lead-free material, used mainly in the sanitary industry, is available under the brand CUPHIN®. It is remarkable not only for its absence of lead, but also for its high copper content of 76%, which prevents bacteria and germs from multiplying.
Our company manufactures and further processes seamless drawn tubes made from cuphin. This enables our customers to offer future-oriented final products and generate an important competitive advantage through this unique selling proposition (USP). In many industries, environmental safety is an important sales argument for products, either because it is a specific user requirement or due to current EU regulations focussed on protecting the environment.

For many years we have impressed our customers with the outstanding quality of the seamless drawn tubes we manufacture with special care and precision. The drawing of the tubes is the first step towards achieving high-quality products. From the tube drawing line, the tubes – mainly in standard dimensions of up to six metres in length – are transported for further processing and finishing, either at Peterseim or on the customer’s premises.

Many customers require tube sections of different lengths to be manufactured and provided with threads, bores, punches or notches. During these processing operations, fine chips and dust are produced, which can stick to the tube sections. These fine particles must then be removed, leaving the tube sections residue-free before they are used or processed further.
To extend our cleaning facilities, during the first quarter of 2011, we invested some 60,000 EUR in spray washing equipment made by Bous. The equipment has 6 nozzles and guarantees thorough cleaning on all sides, while minimizing the use of chemicals.
This investment has already paid off. The cleaning ability of the new equipment is an outstanding complement to our existing machinery, thereby contributing to the quality of semi-finished products made by Peterseim, which is highly appreciated by our customers.

At Peterseim we have traditionally attached great importance to investments, which are seen as valuable building blocks for safeguarding the future. Continuous technical improvements, especially for maintaining a consistent standard in the precision and quality of seamless drawn tubes and tube products, are part of our constant process.

At the beginning of 2011, some 130,000 EUR were invested in the refurbishment of the pickling and washing plant. The new pickling and washing basins leap to the eye; however the refurbishment work, which is not immediately visible, is even more interesting. It includes complete refurbishment of the concrete of the pickling bunds and the surrounding area, including the application of a special coating which prevents permanently the penetration of liquids into the concrete. The tubes for the heating circuit and the fresh water supply have been replaced by new installations which comply with the latest environmental protection standards.

Now the pickling and washing operations in the production process can be carried out safely, reliably and cleanly. This applies to both product quality and environmental protection, two very important areas which are in harmony in our company.

The cooperation between him and the management board is characterized by mutual trust – both parties are confident that they can rely on one another at any time.

Prior to joining Peterseim Metallwerke, Matthias Engelbertz was employed by a major industrial group but he preferred to work in a classic family business. Peterseim Metallwerke represents this type of business, and even the issue of company succession has already been regulated in an exemplary way.

Wilhelm Peterseim, his daughter Silke Peterseim-Sallen and his son-in-law, Alexander Sallen are the “triumvirate” at the top. The head of the Finance + Controlling division has been supporting the management team for a long time. His appointment as authorized officer with effect from the beginning of 2011 underlines their close cooperation.

Since August 2008, Stefan Cordes has supported Peterseim Metallwerke with his extensive expertise in materials and metal forming technology as the head of engineering, development and tube processing.

During his time with the company, his outstanding expertise, results-based approach and his ability to act as a team leader have made him a highly esteemed partner for customers, management board and colleagues alike. The esteem in which he is held has been demonstrated by the management board’s decision to appoint him head of the technical department.

The current head of the technical department, Jürgen Krampe, is leaving Peterseim Metallwerke, to take up a new professional challenge. We wish him well in his new endeavour.
